Second Union Baptist Church

Looking back through the years

image placeholderLooking back through the years, we have seen God's hand in the life of our founding members of Second Union Baptist Church of Columbia, South Carolina. But our vision is to not only honor the past; but to impact lives today with the love of Christ as we follow God's teachings into the future. In the beginning God endowed men with a soul that yearns for the redeeming power of the Holy Spirit: with the hope, that one day we will see His face, and with the conviction, that if we do His will, live His commandments, and have complete faith, we will surely inherit His Kingdom. So, it was with these things in their minds, and with a fervent desire to do as Jesus has commanded his followers to do, that a dedicated group of men and women, in an historical move, drew out from Mt. Calvary and First Calvary Baptist Churches on September 8, 1908, and banded together to form under their own auspices as a church, “Founded Upon A Rock.”

The Pioneers of the church had a Dream

The desire for a church was over-whelming, but a problem existed.  There was not a site for the establishment of one. It was at this time that five families: Thomas, Greene, Brown, Gray, and Jenkins purchased land as a gravesite and donated the front lot for a “Meeting House.”  This “Meeting House” served as a gathering place for the small community of Taylors.  It later became known as Union Baptist #2
